ADAM SHALLECK, AIA
Principal, President
Adam's career in theatre design followed a linear path starting from his studies and interests at Virginia Tech. Employed in various forms of technical theatre and entertainment, his trajectory was aligned during his fourth year when Adam interned at S. Leonard Auerbach & Associates, theatre and architectural lighting consultants. He won several design competitions and formulated his thesis involving theatre architecture.After receiving his architecture degree and working in theatre consulting with Artec Consultants in New York City, Adam worked and traveled for six months in Western Europe on a tour of historic theatres as the first undergraduate recipient of the Noland Traveling Fellowship from the Virginia Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. While there he was employed in architecture offices in Switzerland and at the Department of Architecture of the ETH University in Zurich. Adam returned to theatre consulting with the Auerbach organization in San Francisco in 1990, and was licensed as an Architect in 1995. Adam managed a formidable workload yet maintained a commitment to proactive, detailed service. In 2003, he rose to the level of Principal. With 20+ years of dedicated work and portfolio of projects Adam Shalleck continues his theatre consulting work as founder of The Shalleck Collaborative, Inc. which has a staff of seven and approximately 75 active projects. Based on a wide range of experience from which to draw, he remains facile in applying the appropriate solutions to each project. He combines his diligent approach to systems design and management with a focus on architectural perception as it relates particularly to the student experience and the actor-audience relationship. Adam is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the United States Institute for Theatre Technology and has written for various publications. He serves on the VA Tech School of Architecture + Design Advisory Board and has lectured and juried at several institutions and conferences, and is a certified skipper of sailing vessels up to 50 feet.
