After Over a Year Away, Bainbridge High School Students Return to School and a Brand New Theatre

The new theatre at Bainbridge High School. A black box was made from the kitchen and servery off stage right.

The students at Bainbridge High School came back to a dedicated theatre and black box, which was adapted from a multi-use dining commons. The Shalleck Collaborative assisted Mahlum Architects’ Seattle office in conceiving and designing dedicated theatres by inserting a true stage with a sprung floor, crossover, control booth and tension grid overhead. The area that was the kitchen and servery became dressing/green rooms and a drama lab/black box. Preserving the glass wall was a must, so it was outfitted with blackout shades for performance uses.

The building’s original uses: kitchen, servery and terraced cafeteria.

Sometimes the most sustainable thing you can do is use the building you already have.
