Attuning to the Concert Experience
Portland’5 Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall
Portland, OR
The Arlene Schnitzer is a grand former vaudeville and movie palace that in 1987 was adapted for use primarily as a concert hall. The Shalleck Collaborative facilitated the design and installation of the Meyer Sound Constellation acoustic system with many related accommodations to improve and stretch the acoustic range in the house and on stage and provide more production flexibility for the Oregon Symphony and other users.
Nearly 400 speakers and microphones were discreetly installed throughout the historic auditorium, requiring sensitive coordination and attention to a wide array of conditions. The project reintroduced opulent, acoustically functional draperies around the proscenium. We configured onstage elements to be more adaptable for contemporary uses at a fraction of the weight and dimensions of the previous orchestra shell, enhancing usability while preserving the theater’s visual character.
