Enhancing Comfort, Access, and Sightlines in a Historic Opera House
San Francisco War Memorial Opera House
San Francisco, CA
The Shalleck Collaborative was engaged by San Francisco Opera and San Francisco Ballet to lead the replacement of fixed seating at the San Francisco War Memorial Opera House, a city-owned landmark revered for its architecture and acoustics. Undertaken as a multi-phased effort, the project sought to enhance the patron experience through improved comfort, accessibility, spacing, and sightlines, while honoring the character of a faithfully maintained 1930s performance venue.
Working in close collaboration with the resident companies, the War Memorial Performing Arts Center, and the City of San Francisco Architects, the team navigated the complexities of updating a historic building in active use. Historic seating profiles were carefully replicated at the upper balcony levels, while new custom-designed seating was developed for the orchestra and lower balcony, offering significantly improved ergonomics and accessibility. The scope also included the creation of new accessible seating locations, reconfiguration of the orchestra floor structure, targeted finish upgrades, and coordination of significant technical accommodations.
Despite labor and material shortages, evolving construction protocols, and unknown existing conditions typical of historic facilities, the project was completed in advance of the Opera House’s reopening in 2021, welcoming audiences back to a more comfortable, inclusive, and thoughtfully updated performance environment.
