An Icon Reinvented
The Castro Theatre Adaptation & Restoration
San Francisco, CA
The historic Castro Theatre, an iconic landmark long cherished by the San Francisco community, underwent a bold US $41 million transformation led by Another Planet Entertainment to evolve from cinema into a versatile, 1,200-seat live‑entertainment destination. The Shalleck Collaborative provided theatre and AV consulting for the renovation, including seating reconfiguration, rigging and machinery, AV system design, and extensive coordination during construction.
A centerpiece of the project is a new telescoping, terraced seating system that enables rapid conversion between seated and standing configurations—supporting a broader range of performance types while maintaining the venue’s cinematic legacy. We also advised on accessibility improvements and managed critical interface points between performance infrastructure and historic architecture, ensuring the theatre’s future remains as vibrant and inclusive as its past.
