A Civic Landmark Renewed for Public Discourse and Gathering

Theatre consulting for the renovation of Town Hall Seattle

Town Hall Seattle
Seattle, WA

Town Hall Seattle is a nonprofit civic and cultural organization that hosts more than 425 public events each year, presenting programming that spans the arts, politics, and sciences. For nearly two decades, the organization operated within a former Christian Science Church, constructed in phases in 1916 and 1922, without significant building improvements. As a designated Seattle Landmark listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building is deeply valued by both patrons and the broader community, requiring a careful and respectful approach to modernization.

The project focused on retaining the historic character of the building while thoughtfully integrating contemporary performance support and audience amenities. Town Hall Seattle’s two venues—the Great Hall and the Forum below—were designed to function together or independently, supporting a wide range of civic, cultural, and educational programming. The planning balanced technical capability with warmth and accessibility, reinforcing the organization’s mission to foster public dialogue through radically affordable tickets, in-house production, and an expansive commitment to representing diverse voices and ideas.

The Shalleck Collaborative provided theatre consulting services in support of this transformation, helping to integrate modern systems and infrastructure within a landmark context. The result is a renewed civic gathering space that supports performance, conversation, and community connection, while preserving the integrity of a historic Seattle institution.
